Chair Acupressure

The chair acupressure course really appealed to me because it’s quite a lot like the Shiatsu that I trained in many years ago. It works on meridians, pressure points and applies firm pressure to the structure of the back and shoulders.

There are a lot of similarities with Shiatsu except that it is done on a specially designed chair instead of lying down on a futon. For each of these treatments, the client needs to wear comfortable clothing that is not restrictive.

The chair acupressure routine works on the back, down the spine, along the sacrum, over the buttocks, around the head, neck, arms and hands. It’s a wonderful treatment and can be very effective.

Now, in the scheduled course, the reccomended time for this treatment is just twenty minutes. Although I went along with this during the course, it didn’t seem quite right to me to carry it out in such a short amount of time.

In my opinion, a short, twenty minute treatment doesn’t really allow the practitioner enough time to scan the tension and feel where the problem areas are, so I slightly modified it and created my own routine which is an extension of the basic routine and allows the client to relax and gain more from the treatment.

The actual sitting position for chair acupressure is ideal for a treatment. Every therapy position caters for something different and this position is beneficial for getting to the points as it exposes the back which is not so accessible when lying down.

Hand pressure, forearms, elbows, fingers and thumbs are used to melt away all the tension that has been building up, caused by stress, over activity or just poor posture.

If you have not experienced this treatment before, then now is a good time to try it out. This was actually designed to be used as a quick fix therapy and is ideally suited as a mobile service in offices, exhibitions or wellness events.

I was actually at a wellbeing event recently and the lady who ran it said… “The people who had it done felt wonderful afterwards – you and the chair both work well for the event.”

There was a similar comment from the person who runs the local Spritual Church. She rang me up and said… “When are you coming back? The one’s that had it done, absolutely loved it.”

At these events, I keep it to a thirty minute treatment, which is generally enough for most people. But for private one to one sessions, I extend the time for this treatment and give the client two options – either thirty minutes, or a full one hour session.

The one hour sessions are ideal for people with a lot of tension in their back. Otherwise, thirty minutes is usually ideal for a general, relaxing treatment in between your daily routine.

If you have never tried chair acupressure before, then now is a good time to have a go. It’s a safe way to experience significant relief from back pain, allowing you to feel better afterwards.
